I am one of those students they refer to as "first generational" — I'm the first one in my immediate family to go off to college! To make sure my experience is a full one, I promised I would try very hard to find out everything that is going on on campus and take part in as much as I can.
The LinkUp program, for me, was a very good "opening" to my UNCG experience. First of all, it gave me an opportunity to meet some other new students in an environment that was not as hectic and confusing as those first days of classes would have been if I had not had the chance to be a part of LinkUp. I also got to introduce myself to some of the campus "movers and shakers" before I became just another face in the crowd. Knowing who to call on for support and guidance is more than half the battle when you need a little assistance.
Now in my third year at UNCG, I have finally realized that I can't do the "everything" that I promised my family I would do, but I do seek out advice from people on campus who I know can steer me into programs and projects that will help me fulfill my personal goals and make me the best student I can be. I got connected with some of those advisors through the Office of Multicultural Affairs LinkUp program.
