The advice I needed was there when I needed it

I was SO excited to come to college and I was sure that UNCG was the right pick for me. I decided to participate in LinkUp to meet new people, make friends and move into the residence halls early. I achieved all those goals and made a smooth transition to college right away.

In addition to having a great time with my new LinkUp friends, I took advantage of all of the educational workshops made available during the academic year. I learned about the Speaking Center, where I could be coached on public speaking skills, the Student Success Center and tutoring services and other general information on how to excel academically. I was on my way to being a successful Spartan!

I soon discovered an unexpected benefit from my being part of LinkUp. I had originally planned to major in marketing and UNCG had a great program, but halfway through my freshman year, I decided to go another direction and change my major. I’d heard horror stories of students who had to spend extra semesters or years in college because they’d switched majors and not taken the correct courses or made other bad decisions. Because LinkUp is designed to introduce students to key faculty and staff, I had met some of the people who helped me to apply to the new school and transfer credits. I also had the support of my own LinkUp mentor, who helped to advise me on the process. In the end, my experience switching majors was an easy one and I am on track for on-time graduation with a major in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology and a minor in African American Studies. I am so grateful to have met staff with the right connections during LinkUp!
