Recently, Bernice founded “Be A King,” whose mission is to re-brand and re-image generations of people to elevate the way they Think, Act, Live, and Lead. Through Be A King she hopes to develop a nation of young people who dominate the global marketplace and transform the world culture with a KINGdom mindset. To begin this initiative, she launched the first Be A King Summit for youth in Montgomery, Alabama, which is the same place her father started the Civil Rights Movement.
Bernice is a graduate of Spelman College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Master of Divinity and Doctorate of Law degrees from Emory University. She has also received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Wesley College. She is currently a member of the State Bar of Georgia. On January 30, 2007, the first anniversary of her mother’s death, Bernice returned to her alma mater at Spelman College to announce the establishment of the “Be A King Scholarship in honor of Coretta Scott King.”
Bernice has been featured on Oprah, BET Talk with Tavis Smiley and the Judge Hachett Show to name a few and in People Magazine, Ebony, Essence, Ladies Home Journal, Gospel Today and Charisma Magazine. In 2005, the American Legacy Magazine recognized Bernice as a “Woman of Strength and Courage.” She has also guest hosted a live lunchtime television show on CNN and has written a compelling and inspiring book, Hard Questions, Heart Answers.
Currently, Bernice is developing multi-media production projects for radio, TV, and the internet. She is also devoting time to health and wellness awareness campaigns for different organizations. In the spring of 2009, she will spearhead the Be A King Health Walk through her Be A King LYFE (“Leadership training, Youth development, and Family Empowerment”) Foundation. This initiative will be in honor of her mother and sister, Yolanda D. King.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Award was established in 1986 to honor the memory of the late civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2008 the twenty-second annual award will be presented to an individual student whose community activities and involvement embody the spirit of Dr. King’s service to humanity. The award Selection Committee will be looking for a student who has gone “beyond expectations” in making outstanding contributions in the area of human relations through service, particularly service to the UNCG community.
A qualified recipient could be described in Dr. King’s own words, in his “Conquering Self-Centeredness” speech given in Montgomery, Alabama, on August 11, 1957:
An individual has not started living fully until they can rise above the narrow confines of individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of humanity … Every person must decide at some point, whether they will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgment. Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”
The selection committee will consider the following criteria in choosing the award recipient:
A plaque and a $200 award will be presented to the recipient during the Martin Luther King Celebration Program on January 22, 2008, in the Elliott University Center Cone Ballroom.
