The Humanitarian Award has been established to recognize and reward any UNCG-affiliated student organization or residence hall that has demonstrated social responsibility in responding to domestic and/or global issues since the end of the 2007–2008 academic year.

Eligibility

Nomination is open to any qualified university-affiliated student organization or residence hall with an established account set up for transferring or depositing the monetary award from OMA funds. Examples of suitable accounts are as follows:

  • An off-campus bank account set up in the name of your organization or group
  • A fundraising account through Campus Activities and Programs — NOT an account set up for funds allocated through SGA
  • An affiliation with a UNCG department or office that can accept the monetary award through Interdepartmental Invoice on behalf of and for the use of your group

If you are unsure whether your group has a “suitable account” contact Assistant Director Jeffrey Coleman for clarification.

Criteria

Groups to be considered for the Humanitarian Award must show examples of having a strong commitment to participating in or promoting activities that emphasize social responsibility in responding to domestic and/or global issues.

  • Exhibits concern on domestic and/or global issues affecting the lives of all members in the University community
  • Is active in the University and greater communities
  • Promotes and participates in community activities and programs addressing a need of a specific population

Examples include:

  • Planning a hunger banquet that raises awareness about the living conditions of homeless people in Greensboro and around the world
  • Providing mentoring and educational enrichment for "at risk" youth or youth with disabilities
  • Educating the university community on how to lobby the state and local government for societal needs
  • Launching a breast cancer awareness campaign
  • Organizing a domestic violence vigil

Nominations

The nomination process for the 2009 award closed on Friday, April 3 at 5 pm. The recipient will be announced at the Excellence Awards Banquet on Monday, April 27, 2009.
