How to Become an Ally?

What is an Ally?

An ally is a person whose attitude and behavior works directly to help create an accepting, respectful, and safe environment for all people regardless of race, religion, disability status, ethnicity/national origin, gender, or sexual orientation.

All of us have the potential and influence to be an ally. As a Stop the Hate ally, you are supporting the campus community in implementing ways to prevent hate and to offer support to those who have been affected by hate incidents. Sadly, when someone on campus falls victim to hate, members of the campus community might wonder what could have been done to prevent such hate incidents and hate crimes. Now, you have the opportunity to be a part of directly stopping hate on the campus. It is easy to get involved!

How to become an Ally

There are many possibilities to help you become a Stop the Hate ally on UNCG’s campus whether it be a project for your student organization, action in your residence hall, or your efforts elsewhere on the campus. You might already have an idea as an individual or group for how to make UNCG an even better place by stopping hate.

It is important to seek out like-minded people and ask them to support you in whatever ways they can—especially when you are frustrated in your own campaign against everyday bigotry. If you are not the first voice to speak up against it, be the next voice. Mr. Shane Windmeyer, founder and coordinator of the Stop the Hate program states “To be an ally, we must lead by example and inspire others to do the same.”

If you have an interest in wanting to learn more about how you might impact the campus in preventing hate on campus, please request a presentation. Find out how you can gain more information and possibly make your ideas happen! If you are just curious to learn about why you might want to become more involved, you can also contact the Office of Multicultural Affairs at 334-5090 or email one of the presenters in the Stop the Hate group. Student organizations, other groups, and individuals are highly encouraged to take advantage of this great leadership opportunity!
