Frequently Asked Questions:
- What is the difference between a hate crime and hate incident?
- The main difference between hate crimes and hate incidents is that hate crimes are included under hate crime laws and hate incidents are not. The motivation for both is the same—actions motivated by bias against a particular group or person. Hate incidents are not technically crimes. A hate crime is a hate incident that has risen to the level of a crime. All hate crimes are hate incidents, but not all incidents are hate crimes.
- Where and how do I report a hate crime/hate incident?
- If you or someone you know has been a victim of a hate crime or hate incident, please report immediately to the campus police department at http://police.uncg.edu or at 334.4444 or to the Dean of Students Office at 334.5099. You can report information either through the online reporting or anonymous reporting form. It is important to report any incident that you believe may be criminal and may be motivated by hate or bias. If you’re not sure whether what happened to you “counts” as a hate crime/incident, please report it anyway. The more information we have, the more we can do to keep this campus safe for everyone.
- What support is available to me if I am a victim of a hate crime/hate incident?
- A university member is available to provide you with information to support your situation. You should never feel that you are alone in a situation. You are encouraged to ask for assistance by using the university resources available to you by first contacting the Dean of Students Office in 141 Mossman at 334-5099. You can also visit the campus police website for additional resource information. And check for more information on this website.
