An ally is a person whose attitude and behavior works directly to help create an accepting, respectful, and safe environment for all people regardless of race, religion, disability status, ethnicity/national origin, gender, or sexual orientation.
If you as a student have been confronted with a hate/bias incident, we strongly encourage you to speak up and let a university staff member know about the situation. The University is concerned about you and wants to help, but cannot help unless you inform someone about the campus situation.
It is not your fault that this has happened to you. It is important for you to know that you have many allies and support on campus. You do not have to face your situation alone. Destructive words and behavior should be reported. UNCG takes these matters seriously. Speak up! You are a valued member of this community.
Whether you are a student who lives on campus or off, there are university staff around the campus who can be a resource for you if you have experienced a hate/bias incident on the campus. They can help you understand, prevent, and appropriately respond to hate incidents and hate crimes. You are encouraged to contact them so that they know your situation and can assist you. You have many allies on the UNCG campus. They are ready to respond when you need them.
The Office of Multicultural Affairs coordinates the Stop the Hate program and the Hate/Bias Response Team. You may get in touch with a member of the Response Team by first calling OMA at 334-5090. One of the Response Team members will talk with you and provide resource information.
UNCG is a community in which people of any racial or ethnic identity, age, or background can achieve an informed appreciation of their own and different cultures. It is a community of actively engaged faculty, students, staff, and alumni founded on open dialogue, shared responsibility, and respect for the distinct contributions of each member. Together, we can cultivate a community that values each other and models honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility.
